“My brother envisioned a lasting cancer research foundation. We are humbled by the generosity of his friends who have offered their time and talents and introduced us to their friends, to continue the Friends of V and enlarge our Foundation Family.”

In early December, when the pain grew so fierce he had to call off a weekend of studio work for ESPN, Jimmy had a local shop print up 1,000 small cards. He had hundreds of people across the country calling him, writing him, encouraging him, but he needed more, VICTORIES it said on each card. “Valvano’s Incredible Cancer Team of Really Important Extraordinary Stars.”

“See?” he said. “I’m going to make a team. . .My own team–everybody can join. This is it, baby, my ultimate pregame talk. I need this one, gotta have it. Gotta have so many people calling my answering machine each day that they can’t get through. Gotta have people all over the country opening their windows and shouting it out: “JIMMY VEEEEEE! DON’T GIVE UP!’“

Your support matters!

“Getting someone to write a check for $100,000 is huge, but few people can do that.  Getting 100,000 people to donate $10 or $20 a month enables everyone to play a direct role in finding cures for cancer.  Being a part of the V Team has been so rewarding as it has allowed me to fight back against a disease that has taken so much from my life.  Everyone should have the opportunity to be a part of that team.” -Julie Allegro

The V Foundation takes great pride in its fiscal responsibility and is proud to announce that it gives 100 percent of all new direct cash donations to cancer research and related programs. Recognized for its prudent fiscal management, The V Foundation has earned multiple top four-star ratings from Charity Navigator, America’s largest charity evaluator, placing it in the top 10% of all rated charities. Receiving a top rating from Charity Navigator indicates that The V Foundation has outperformed most of its peers in its efforts to manage and grow its finances.

NAPA VALLEY, CA, AUGUST 10, 2015 – The V Foundation for Cancer Research’s annual fundraiser, The V Wine Celebration, garnered more than $10.6 million over the weekend of August 6-9 for cancer research. With an unprecedented $3 million matching grant from an anonymous donor, the total included more than $7.8 million in “fund-a-need” donations to support pediatric brain cancer research.

“There are moments in your life where you feel like everything you have done up until then leads to this one single moment,” said Julie Allegro, founder and co-chair of The V Wine Celebration. “Tonight was one of those nights. The feeling in that room – the excitement, the tears, the energy – we were all one, for a brief moment. And together, we exceeded our wildest goals and raised over $10 million, and will make a dent in finding a cure to cancer.”

This year’s V Wine Celebration gala dinner at Nickel & Nickel winery welcomed back Mike “Coach K” Krzyzewski to rouse the crowd in the same way he has inspired and motivated players during his basketball coaching career. He suggested renaming The V Wine Celebration “The Winning Foundation” “because that’s what The V Foundation has done. It’s found cures. Jimmy (Valvano) was all about winning. That’s why this foundation was formed. Instead of being in his hospital room and saying, ‘I’m going to die,’ he said, ‘I’m going to win.’ “

“Everybody in this room is part of the team tonight,” he added. “Everybody will do something to help.”
The most compelling component of the auction was the fund-a-need, with more than half the guests raising their paddles to pledge donations to support research into pediatric brain cancer, the leading cause of death by disease in children.
