Halfway betweenFlorence and Siena, near the village of Panzano, sits a beautiful guesthouse overlooking many of the most perfectly situated vineyards (Fontodi, Castello dei Rampolla, La Massa, and Villa Cafaggio) in the Chianti region--the area known as the Conca D’Oro (the Golden Shell). Make this guesthouse yours for one magical week as you tour the Tuscan countryside and visit local wineries. And when you visit Florence, enjoy dinner for two at the Cantinetta Antinori, located in the Palazzo Antinori at the end of Florence’s most exclusive shopping street, Via Tornabuoni. All the exquisite Antinori wines are available, either by glass or bottle, to accompany the classic Tuscan cuisine. Savor the wisdom passed down from 26 generations of winemakers.
Steeped in history and architecture, Chianti has much to share. Within minutes of the guesthouse are the major hilltop and market towns that are home to Chianti Classicos and Super Tuscans alike: Castellina (Fonterutoli and Castellare), Gaiole (Castello di Ama and Brolio), Greve (Viticcio, Verrazzano, and Savignola Paolina), and Radda (Castello d’Albola and Volpaie). Within easy driving range are also the cities of Siena with its famous piazza and a duomo that rivals Florence’s, Montalcino, a gorgeous fortified hilltop town, where you can sample up to 100 Brunellos at its enotecas, and San Gimingano, famous for its Vernaccia and its medieval towers which give it a mini New York skyline.
This rustic guest house is perfect for a family or two couples: the bedroom has a queen bed; the high-tech, comfortable living room couch opens into two single beds; and the loft also has two single beds. A kitchen and bathroom complete the modern accommodations. If visit times can be coordinated, Drs. Olivera and Seth Finn, who converted the silo next to their restored 15th century farmhouse into this guest house, would be available to act as guides in mid-September 2011, when Greve and Panzano sponsor wine festivals on two successive weekends.

This year’s Fund A Need honoree, vintner Teri Kuhn, battled leukemia and won! In honor of her victory, “glass acts” Ron and Teri Kuhn of Pillar Rock Vineyards generously donated this incredible vertical library of ten noteworthy vintages. Each of the ten years is presented in a 6-bottle wine box. A very special single 6-liter of their 2003 Pillar Rock Cabernet Sauvignon is commemorative of Teri conquering cancer.

Pillar Rock is known for their ultra-premium, highly-rated Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is exactly what you expect when you think of a Stags Leap Cab: a dark and fleshy wine, a velvet hammer, rich and powerful but kissed with a gentle finish. It's subtle, spicy and dark. Supple, with rich mocha and brownie flavors and lively currant and spice. While the flavors are concentrated and the wine is well-structured, it offers a sense of finesse and complexity. Take home a cellar-filling selection of the wine Robert Mondavi called, “Distinctly elegant.” Rock on!
