V Foundation Partners with St. Helena Hospital Foundation to Raise Funds for New Cancer Center at St. Helena HospitalJanuary 9, 2007
ST. HELENA — The V Foundation and St. Helena Hospital Foundation announced today that The V Foundation will contribute to and help raise funds for the new Cancer Center at St. Helena Hospital, one of the major projects of the recently announced $27.5 million Capital Campaign for St. Helena Hospital. The V Foundation has pledged $250,000 in direct support for the Center and will help raise additional funds by featuring the Cancer Center at this yearʼs V Foundation Wine Celebration as the beneficiary of the Fund a Need Lot and three additional vintner lots to be auctioned at the event. The Wine Celebration, held in Napa Valley since 1998, is one of the largest charity auctions in Napa Valley. This year the two day event will be held August 3rd-4th.“We are excited to partner with St. Helena Hospital Foundation on this great cause,” said Robert Lloyd, Chairman of The V Foundation. “We strive to leave a significant portion of the proceeds from the Wine Celebration each year in the Napa Valley and the Bay Area. The state-of-the-art Cancer Center that St. Helena Hospital is building will offer cancer patients all the advantages they would find at a cancer center located in a large metropolitan area and will be a significant help to the Napa Valley in fighting this terrible disease. We are happy to help support its creation.” “Keeping pace with the latest in cancer research, treatment and technology will continue to be the ongoing focus of the Cancer Center after it opens in 2008,” said JoAline Olson, President and CEO of St. Helena Hospital. “It is so rewarding to have a national leader in the battle against cancer supporting our efforts.” Rick Jones, St. Helena Hospital Foundation Chair and Co-Chair of the Capital Campaign, added, “The visibility that the Campaign will get from the Wine Celebration’s nationwide attendees through the Fund a Need lot and the additional auction lots will help us significantly in our fund raising efforts. We hope to raise over $1 million for the Campaign through this partnership with The V Foundation.” The Hospitalʼs new 12,500 sq. ft. comprehensive Cancer Center will occupy the entire top floor of the new Cancer and Outpatient Surgery Pavilion, scheduled to break ground later this year. It will feature state-of-the-art radiation oncology treatment (CT simulation for treatment planning, using the Hospitalʼs new 64- slice spiral CT scanner, and a Varian linear accelerator with IMRT technology, which delivers high doses of radiation with pinpoint accuracy to cancer cells); chemotherapy suites; a patient restoration and therapy spa, a cancer resource center, and a special needs boutique. Next to heart disease, cancer is the leading cause of death in California. Of Californiaʼs 58 counties, Napa County had the tenth highest incidence of cancer cases diagnosed from 1998-2002. Lake County, where approximately one-third of St. Helena Hospitalʼs patients reside, had the third highest incidence. In addition to the Cancer Center, Phase 1 of construction at the Hospital includes the development of an expanded Outpatient Surgery Center, the relocation and expansion of the Family Birth Center, a new cardiovascular/peripheral vascular lab, the addition of new diagnostic technologies and an electronic medical records system. Total cost for Phase 1 is $30 million. To date over $15 million in funding and pledges has been raised to support the Campaign. # The V Foundation was founded in 1993 by ESPN and the late Jim Valvano to fund cancer research grants nationwide. Since then, The Foundation has awarded more than 280 cancer research grants in 37 states and the District of Columbia. Starting on October 1, 2006 The V Foundation now awards 100 percent of all new direct cash donations and net proceeds of events directly to cancer research and related programs. Among the nationʼs elite charities in terms of fiscal responsibility, The V Foundation has been rated a top 4-star charity by Charity Navigator for four consecutive years. The V Foundation Wine Celebration was first held in 1999. Spearheaded by co-founders Julie and Andrew Constantin, the event offers guests a way to fight back against a terrible disease by gathering together each year to celebrate victories and raise awareness and funds for critical research. The event has raised more than $21 million for the fight against cancer, funding more than 28 grants in California, with 20 of those going to prestigious programs in Napa Valley and the immediate Bay Area.
